My Home Office Makeover

Last October was the craziest (and best!) month of my life thus far. After months of searching, planning and dreaming, my husband and I bought our first home together, I moved to Greenville, SC from Charlotte, and we got married just two weeks later. My husband can attest to the minor nervous breakdowns I had leading up to these big life moments. That's 3 HUGE life changing events in the course of two weeks, not to mention the stressful weeks leading up to them full of planning for our wedding from another city, pulling documents and correspondence for our mortgage application, and packing and moving across state lines. We have actually yet to go on our honeymoon (although we will the first week of March!), knowing that one more big event would put us over the top.

The home we purchased is in a popular neighborhood in Greenville, nestled on a very family oriented, young street. It was originally built in 1924 and has much of its original character, although previous owners did some restoration in the 1980s and the most recent owner added on a master suite turning the home into a quaint three bedroom, 2 bath.

As we planned and coordinated the move and home purchase, I was fortunate enough to negotiate a work-from-home set up with my current company. I work in insurance consulting and much of my role can be done via phone and e-mail/online. I think a job change would have really sent me over the metaphorical edge, so I am grateful that I got to come to Greenville with my job as a constant. From the moment we found the house, I day dreamed of turning the front bedroom into a quaint home office, and we are well on our way.

I wanted to show you a bit of the transformation it's taken thus far. When we moved in, the walls were stark white and white curtains hung across the windows. We're doing this piece by piece and as budget friendly as possible (not only for this room but for our whole house), so it's a work in progress but i am pleased with where we are at.

To give you an idea of where we started, here is a sad iPhone photo from the weekend after we moved in.

Yikes. #hotmess

My first step was to get those white walls painted. I had been lusting over various shades of grey and eventually settled on Benjamin Moore Gray Owl. I also rearranged the furniture a bit, found a rug I like on RugsUSA, and played with various accessories around the room.

Here is what it looks like today!

To be a bit more budget friendly, I re-purposed some pieces I had from Ikea. The desk is the Lesvik from Ikea. The piece along the right wall when you look in through the door is actually the Hemnes TV stand from Ikea that was in my living room in my single girl apartment. Eventually I may move the TV stand under the window and get two small tufted chairs (maybe with some color?) to place in front of the desk. Even though I don't ever have meetings in there. But still...

I also had one of the thousands of photographs I took when I studied in Paris blown up to a 40x60 and printed on canvas. Thanks to the help of some friends who know how to work power tools (because I definitely do not), we did this on a budget as well.

The rug is the Satara Edison Nickel Rug from Rugs USA. They are constantly running really great sales so I snagged it at 75% off. I will say that I have had some customer service issues with them (got the wrong rug one time and then it was lost in the mail for another rug we ordered), but they are tolerable given the extremely affordable prices.

The round table with the lamp, clock, flowers, etc. sitting on it was actually my night stand in my old apartment and is made from two interlocking pieces of plywood, a round plywood top, and then a table skirt and glass top. It was in my parents home before I moved out on my own after college and it's been with me ever since! The skirt also makes for some nice hidden storage within the office.

I recently purchased the Ritva curtains in a dark gray from Ikea, so this will go up soon. Just gotta buy the curtain rods first. Like I said... baby steps.

So there you have it! Our very budget friendly work in progress home office. I'm going to compile some of my work-from-home tips in the next couple of weeks. Going from an office to being home full time was an adjustment. I want to share what works for me and hopefully hear what works for you if you work from home!
